In Xueshan, Snow Mountain, Trekking Day 3, it’s certainly worth the climbing pain when you look at the silvery yellow of the highland sunrise and sea of cloud.

Xueshan Trek: Importance of Breakfast
In order to catch Xueshan sunrise, we woke up very early and departed at 3 am. Although breakfast was not as delicious as restaurants’ and was rice porridge and Chinese steam bun…etc, they were all be heated and warm, especially in high mountains. Even though we didn’t feel hungry at all and loss of appetite at that moment, the tour guide told us to eat some to store energy for a trek later, since it consumed a lot of calories when climbing to the summit.
Challenges in the dark
Except for starring sky, you see nothing when departing in the dark. Therefore, a headlight is necessary. Soon, we crossed the well-known Balck Forest and it got lost easily in dark. But Eye Travel Taiwan arranged two tour guides, one was at the head of the line and other was at the back to avoid anyone leaving the team. We heard the wild animals sounds all the way and because people have found Taiwan Bear in Snow Mountain area in recent years, I definitely didn’t dare to trek alone.
On the way to Xueshan Summit
It took around 3-hour trek from 369 Cabin to Xueshan Summit and wind become very strong and the apparent temperature dropped when we got to the ridges in the last one hour. The thinner air, the higher elevation. We followed the tour guide’s pace and kept the pace steady. Sooner or later, we would reach the top of Snow Mountain Main Peak.
Dead wood which was the end result of forests fires a couple years ago come into sight in the last mile and it seemed like a bleak and desolate landscape.
Touching Sunrise & Facebook Live
Unconsciously, we’ve done most of the challenges when keeping hard work. Suddenly, ” Summit! Summit!”, someone yelled and we found ourselves almost there.
There was a big stone tablet on the top of Xueshan Main Peak and it’s no doubt that that is the most popular place for picture-taking on the summit. Because we got a signal here, whether calling friends, doing FaceBook Live, or posting on Instagram, you could take whatever you like. As Snow Mountain (Xueshan) Main Peak is the second highest mountain in Taiwan, more than half of mountains can be seen on the top. It completely was awesome, and it had a good weather in the central and south of Taiwan today.
But it looked cloudy with occasional rain in Taipei and Yilan since they were under the spectacular sea of cloud.
We felt warmer and warmer after sunlight shone on us and we didn’t complain the heat of Sun at this moment. Everyone caught time to admire the magnificent beauty and take pictures.
Missing scenery on the way back home
Xueshan Cirque was very clear to see on the way back home and it is a special geological landscape in the cold climate. But you must question about it since Taiwan is in the tropical zone. That was very cold in the world way back in the ice age and Taiwan is no exception. Therefore, Xueshan Cirque is the remains of the ice age and that’s why Taiwanese Selmon was discovered here.
We looked back to Xueshan Summit when going down to the bottom of Xueshan Cirque. The largeness seemed to distort the visual space. How spectacular it is!
Ancient Woods in the fairy tales
We reached the forest which is composed of many stylish trees. We called it “Yushan Juniper” and it is endemic species in Taiwan, as well. It looked like a secret garden in the fairy tales.
Blue sky, white clouds, and green mountains accompanied us on the trail. We never thought to see this kind of scenery before trekking. What a gorgeous view!
We saw Black Forest clear when crossing it and it is certainly a dense forest.
It was very comfortable to walk in the Balck Forest in the day time and it was the best nature shelter.
Back to 369 Cabin
Downhill is much easier than uphill and only took less than 2 hours to get back to 369 Cabin. We took a short rest and enjoyed brunch prepared by Eye Travel Taiwan besides packing up the bag.
Start planning the next trip on the way back home
I remembered to keep asking myself many questions: why I register the tour, why I spend money on suffering torture… etc. But truth can be told after seeing the scenery as pretty as the postcard’s and it was completely worth a visit.
It must be a lesson from nature and told us ” No pain, no gain”.
Life is meaningful and great because of challenges and you should waste your life enjoying good things! good scene!
Back to Wuling Farm & Taipei
Eventually, we got to Wuling Farm after the endless and annoying downhill and it was around at 2 pm. It was a little hot here since we just went down from Xueshan and kinda worried about the much higher temperature in Taipei.
It still needed 3~4 hour drive back to Taipei, and consequently, everyone fell asleep soon after getting on the car. The driver had a reliable driving skill and kept a steady and safe speed even if in the winding road. I missed the foods in the downtown and also was thinking the delicious dinner in the night market at this moment.
Although multi-day trekking is really exhausted, you will improve the life experience after the trek. It’s no wonder that more and more people come here to challenge themselves in their holiday vacation. Good rest and relax are for the long life journey. I swear that I certainly opt for a villa holiday rather than a trekking holiday next time, hehe!
