Paiyun Lodge at the altitude of 3402 meters is our destination today. In Yushan, Jade Mountain, Trekking Day 2, although we’ll face a series of challenges after stepping onto the trail today, the picture-postcard scenery all the way is certainly of great worth.

Check in at Tataka Police Station
The ranger would check ID/passport and permit of each participant at the trailhead, and it’s not allowed to trek without ID/passport and permit. There is a restroom here and we are going to start a 2-day trekking without shower facility and comfortable restroom in the wilds. Don’t worry and we’ll be in Yushan Main Peak tomorrow. Relax and have fun with Eye Travel Taiwan.
We will head for trailhead by car after checking identity. Don’t underestimate the 10 min drive, it will save us around 50 min walk and transportation fee is included in Yushan hiking tour.
No more vehicles after passing through Tataka Trailhead and you have to walk by yourself.
Beautiful Mountain Trail
The trail is relatively flat and there is charming scenery in the beginning. The tour guide reminds us of water drink, stable hiking pace, food supplement….etc all the way and please follow his instructions to keep best physical condition and make sure everything is going well with us.
There is one eco toilet that is a type of waterless toilet along the way and it definitely is a 5-star restroom in the wilds. Of course, there is also no water supply here.
Lunch at Yushan West Peak Scenic Viewpoint
West viewpoint is at the altitude of 3000 meters and it is a 400-meter ascent from Tataka trailhead (2600 meters). We will have lunch here and please prepare your own personal simple lunch in advance because 3-day hiking is not including lunch. Take a long rest and main challenges today are just around the corner.

It is getting more clouds in the valley in the afternoon and looks picture-postcard!!
We pass through narrow lanes with the steep cliff and the tour guide reminds each of us regulating the breathing because you’re not getting enough oxygen at high altitudes, your muscles can’t work as efficiently and you might feel tired, or even get dizzy. Please makes sure to keep the best condition in each step and avoid any potential risk.
[Safety]: The devil is in the details. Safety is the top priority of Eye Travel Taiwan and therefore, how to lower any risk is the only way to complete the trip safely and it is the commitment of Eye Travel Taiwan, as well.
Yushan Great Cliff
The famous Yushan Great Cliff looks very impressive, but the trail is quite safe on the bottom of it. Everyone seems to be tired when we get there.
It is relatively tough from Great Cliff to Paiyun Lodge because most of the people are usually lacking energy on a day hike lasting 4 hours. You can see Yushan Main Peak and the high ridge in the distance and Yushan seems to be far away and fortunately, that is tomorrow’s job. We just want to reach Paiyun Lodge for a test as soon as possible.
The trail passes through several old-growth forests of Taiwan Hemlock on the way to Paiyun Lodge and Taiwan Hemlock is quite different from Yushan Juniper in Xueshan Hike. Although Yushan and Xueshan belong to high mountains in Taiwan, the sceneries are completely dissimilar from each other.
Paiyun Lodge is there, cheer up!
You can see Paiyun Lodge, but there seems to be endless uphill in the trail. The tour guide says that it’s all in your head. More 20 min walk will be expected if you don’t think it too much and focus on the steps in front of you.
Paiyun Lodge in Yushan Trek
We finally arrived at Paiyun Lodgeon a day hike lasting 6.5 hours. The tour guide reminds each participant to put warm gears on right away when reaching Paiyun Lodge since it gets cold very quickly if you don’t keep moving or exercise.
Later, the tour guide arranges the dormitory beds and we can take a short rest on our sleeping place. Meanwhile, everyone is waiting for dinner ready.

The dinner is not super-tasty but I think it’s good enough in this remote mountains.
There is around a 30% chance of altitude sickness in the altitude over 2500 meter and physical signs and symptoms may include a headache, loss of appetite, and trouble sleeping. Mild altitude sickness is common and most people would recover by themselves when they get used to the height. However, sometimes there is an 1 % exception. Severe altitude sickness can affect your lungs and brain and it may be deadly. The best treatment for severe altitude sickness is to go to a lower altitude as fast as you can. General speaking, we will use oximeter to decide the severity level and also offer portable Oxygen cans for the emergency.
Watching stars is one of few activities in the high mountains and the fascinating starring sky completely amazed us.
